Homeless & Hungry began as an outreach of the youth group from First Lutheran Church, Fargo. A handful of students felt called to do something with their faith. From that time of deciphering and prayer, Homeless & Hungry was birthed.
The original goal was to engage 50 participants and to raise $10,000 for Churches United for the Homeless. At the time it seemed like a lofty goal. Roughly 65 students and invested adults joined the 1st ever Homeless & Hungry event…and $50,000 was raised in the inaugural year! Very early on, we all learned that God was up to something with this.
Since that inaugural year, more and more churches and businesses have joined forces with First Lutheran Church to take part.
The uniqueness of H&H is that each host site can ‘own’ their experience. The model that is currently in place allows XYZ Church or ABC Business to sign up as a host site. They are each in charge of their own recruitment, fundraising, and implementation of the event. The ‘corporate’ H&H model lays out the schedule for them, provides each site with the tools to succeed, and then holds city-wide events for all participants.
It’s a beautiful combination of small and big. There is a place for every person and every entity that is called.
Are you feeling called???
